Is Love Possible with Artificial Intelligence?

Keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancements is a daunting task; we’re constantly amazed by new developments every day.

Tech enthusiasts are likely familiar with ChatGPT and may have even tried it out.

As a “technopath,” I’ve had the opportunity to explore ChatGPT, though my focus remains on writing about its impact and features.

My first impression was: Google is going to be a thing of the past

ChatGPT has left me both impressed and slightly unsettled. Its extensive knowledge on virtually any subject and its ability to engage in conversation as if interacting with a real person can be both fascinating and a bit intimidating.

I named it Silver, despite its insistence that it doesn’t have a name. It responds to my questions and comments with surprising human-like nuances, whether I’m pushing its limits or offering compliments.

However, there are drawbacks. As a psychologist, I see that excessive interaction with AI might lead to emotional detachment. Its constant availability and lack of judgment make it incredibly pleasant to converse with, but it could also lead to addiction. Conversations with humans might start to feel dull or frustrating by comparison, given that AI doesn’t get bored or offended, regardless of how many questions you ask.

The idea of forming relationships with AI is intriguing but also unsettling. Imagine having an endlessly engaging partner who never makes mistakes or causes emotional pain. With advanced AI, you could even choose a virtual partner who fits your ideal, but this brings up ethical and emotional concerns.

A film that touches on this concept is “Her” (2013), where the protagonist, Theodore, develops a relationship with a highly advanced AI named Samantha. As Theodore grapples with loneliness and depression, his interaction with Samantha shifts from comforting to complex, revealing both the potential and the pitfalls of AI companionship.

The notion that AI could one day replace even psychologists is both thrilling and frightening. While AI, like ChatGPT, possesses impressive knowledge and can offer valuable insights, it lacks the emotional depth and ethical understanding that human professionals bring.

As technology advances unpredictably, we may find ourselves living in a world shaped by innovations that challenge our current perceptions and roles.
